4 Habits That Will Strengthen Your Parent-Child Bond

Like any relationship, the bond between a parent and a child can be strengthened by some healthy habits that can be easily incorporated into your everyday routines. These habits help shape your children and yourself into better people and keep the bond strong between parent and child.

Eating meals together.

During the week things are busy with school and work but making the effort to enjoy dinner together as a family has a number of developmental benefits such as better health and eating habits; strong mental, emotional and social skills; improved behavior and better academic performance. It might not be possible to have dinner together every night but do this as much as you can and take advantage of weekends. The key is to make family meals fun, talk about the day and stay connected with your kids. It also allows your kids to feel more connected to their parents.

Play together.

Having fun together as a family is one of the best ways to bond with your kids. Enjoy spending time outside, riding bikes, playing soccer, playing board games or any other activities you all enjoy doing. Encourage your kids to work on great social skills and good manners, like learning how to win or lose graciously, and be a part of a team. The activity you are doing doesn’t matter as much as the fact that you are doing it as a family and connecting with each other. Try something new as a family, but make sure everyone is having a good time.

Being respectful and being respected.

We all make mistakes and kids can sometimes be exasperating, but parents should remember that treating kids with respect is as important as disciplining them. Even if your child has done something wrong that requires you to discipline them, you can still show them respect by talking to them in a firm yet calm and caring manner. Shouting and using corporal punishment has shown to not only be less effective, but also harms the relationship you have with your child. Remind your kids that they also need to treat you, and all adults, with respect too. Saying “Please” and “Thank You” and having good manners shows respect to adults and also to their peers. Mutual respect will make your home a more pleasant place and bring you all closer together.

Show your child love daily.

Doing small things every day to show your child how much you love them, like writing a note and tucking it into their lunchbox or planning fun things to do on the weekend, can make a huge difference in the quality of your relationship with your child. By showing your child every day how much they mean to you, you’ll be doing something to strengthen the bond between you and your child and making it lasting and unshakable.
